Time-lapse photography highlights the beautiful organic transformations of blooming plants, showing the passage of time at scales invisible to the human eye. These revealing films are transformed into a luminous meditation on the transformative power of art and self reflection - all captured on an 8 inch TV/VCR combo unit from the late nineties.
The music of Twilight Electric (8bitpeoples) draws on the legacy of the first generation of game consoles, whose unique sonic pallet would prepared the ears of a generation of for the electronic music revolution to come.
vintage consumer video equipment, lovingly salvaged, and customized with ad-hoc dials and switches hot-wired to the PCBs in a process known as circuit bending. These modifications turn formerly outdated and mundane equipment into experimental instruments by giving them a second life well outside the manufactures specifications.

As the film progresses, these artefacts become more pronounced, marking the passage of time.
In the world of analog video art, everyone knows the mighty Edirol V-4. One of my favorite creative tools is the famous Edirol V4 video mixer, which I used here for its mirroring and feedback capabilities. In addition to providing visual intrest these video effects further the metaphoric self reflection and ++++ at the heart of the piece. The components of the video feed are looped, delayed, and manipulated, envisioning this transformation as an unfolding dance of colored light. Displayed on an 8-inch CRT TV and recorded in a dark room, the footage preserves the soft glow, flicker, and dynamic energy of analog display. The result contrasts the natural rhythms of life with the asynchronus deviations introduced by circuit-bent manipulation, creating a hypnotic interplay between organic, technologic, natural, and manipulated. A minimalist reflection on the experience of transformation.
After its release, the video drew the attention of Twilight Electric, who embraced it and granted his perission to use the song for the film. Created independently on a budget of zero, Self Portrait has since screened at eight film festivals, receiving honorable mentions from Altered Images and Experimental Response Cinema. Its journey reflects the quiet power of experimentation and reflection to transform a simple idea into a resonant whol
