I had the pleasure of working with the multi-talented producer Noex Beats to create the visuals for their set at the Helios II URL festival. One of the standout tracks from the set, “Paper Soul,” quickly became a personal favorite of mine. This sequence showcases some of my favorite work with rescanned analog glitches, using custom-built equipment to manipulate and distort video signals.
In this piece, I focused on stretching and distorting the form of a 3D rendered dancer, using the CRT rescanning technique to add an organic, analog texture to the digital animation. The effect creates a mesmerizing interplay between the dancer’s fluid movements and the unpredictable, glitchy distortions, adding a layer of surrealism and depth to the visuals.
Additionally, the dark overlay seen in the visuals is generated in real-time by an audio-reactive network built inside of the visual scripting language TouchDesigner. This real-time interaction allows the visuals to respond dynamically to the music, creating a seamless fusion of sound and image that enhances the viewer’s immersion in the performance. The combination of these techniques results in a visually and sonically cohesive experience that highlights the cutting-edge nature of both the music and the visuals.
